The 24 Most Effective Acne Scar Treatments Dermatologists Swear By Elle

Elle posted “The 24 Most Effective Acne Scar Treatments Dermatologists Swear By Elle” The article includes Visha Skincare founder, Dr. Purvisha Patel‘s expertise on mineral sunscreens over chemical sunscreens for people with sensitive skin.

Dark spots, be gone.

Stop. Before you even think about picking at your pimples, consider the consequences. You know the cycle: a fresh pimple emerges, you pop it, it leaves a scar that you frequently pick at, and boom—now you have a dark spot. The more you repeat this cycle, the more damage you cause to your skin.

What are acne scars?

“Acne scars are the result of inflammation from acne blemishes,” board-certified dermatologist and Founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology, Dr. Corey L. Hartman, tells ELLE.com. “Acne scarring may be rolling (superficial, longer depression in the skin), ice pick (very small but deep), atrophic (very superficial but very thin), or hypertrophic (thick scars raised above the skin),” Dr. Elyse Love of GlamDerm Gramercy adds.

How can I remove acne scars?

Topical treatments (more on that below) are great temporary fixes, but Love advises seeing a professional to begin your journey of permanently removing of acne scars. “Treatment of rolling, ice pick, and atrophic scars require procedures that increase collagen production such as CO2 laser, fraxel, and/or microneedling with radiofrequency,” she explains. Meanwhile, hypertrophic scars require more attention: “Hypertrophic scars are classically treated with injections to soften the scars but laser treatments such as PDL, excel v, laser genesis, and CO2 laser can also be helpful.”

Can acne scars be permanently removed?

The bad news? “The results of scar treatments are permanent (pending the acne is under control),” Love says. It will also take several treatments to bring you closer to the clear, even-toned skin of your dreams. Not to be confused with hyperpigmentation, acne scars are the “textural changes that develop as a result of severely inflamed acne nodules and cysts that occur deep in the dermis,” Dr. Paul Nassif, a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon of NassifMD Dermaceuticals, says.

What are the best products for acne scars?

When shopping for topical products to help treat your scars, Nassif says to check ingredient labels for exfoliating agents. “Look for a product with good concentrations of AHAs and BHAs like glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acid. A good retinol product would be a close second, to help boost skin cell turnover and collagen to help fill in the scarring,” he explains. Just be sure to always follow up with sunscreen.

Ahead, the 24 best products for treating acne scars.

1. CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser

According to Love, if you want prescription-grade results at an affordable drugstore price, CeraVe’s Acne Foaming Cleanser delivers. Formulated with benzoyl peroxide to attack active breakouts, this cleanser helps to control acne so you won’t risk breakouts turning to scars.

2. Unseen Sunscreen

An important step in reducing the appearance of acne scars is sun protection. Apply Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen liberally to ensure your dark marks won’t get any darker.

3. Hydro-Stars Starter Pack

The minute you see a breakout forming, reach for your Starface pimple patches. Stopping stubborn breakouts right in their tracks, the patches are made of hydrocolloid, which aids in minimizing the look of pimples.

4. Retinol Skin Brightener 1%

Add retinol to your routine to help slough away dead skin and lighten the appearance of dark marks left behind from breakouts. ZO Skin Health offers different strengths to choose from for different skin types.

5. Niacinamide Dark Spot Corrector

Don’t underestimate the power of niacinamide. Formulated specifically for melanin-rich skin, this lightweight formula absorbs without leaving a sticky film and works to reduce the appearance of dark spots.

6Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Topical Retinoid Acne Treatment

6. Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Topical Retinoid Acne Treatment

“For a prescription-strength retinoid in an over-the-counter gel, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% takes it up a notch. Previously only available as a prescription, this gel helps clear blackheads, whiteheads, acne blemishes, and clogged pores. Topical retinoids also help to treat textural irregularities and acne lesions that contribute to discoloration.” — Dr. Corey L. Hartman

7. Hyper Even Brightening Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum

Vitamins C and E work together to combat hyperpigmentation. Plus, thanks to turmeric, fruit enzymes, kojic acid, and more, one pump helps to lighten scarring and brighten your complexion.

8. AlphaRet Overnight Cream

“A retinol alternative that also contains lactic acid. This nighttime serum is formulated in a moisturizing base that provides all of the benefits of retinol with virtually none of the irritation. It is a great option for those who have had difficulty tolerating other retinol [since it] exfoliates gently.” — Dr. Hartman

9. Detox Pads – Original: Complexion Perfecting Treatment Pads

“The pads provide daily, gentle exfoliation. They also keep the pores clear, help reverse past damage, and prevent new scarring, too.” — Dr. Paul Nassif

10. Acne Triple Clear Exfoliating Facial Scrub

“This is an exfoliating scrub formulated with salicylic acid to help increase cell turnover, resulting in reduced acne, scarring, and preventing future breakouts. I recommend using this two to three times a week and increasing usage as necessary.” — Dr. Nassif

11. Murad InvisiScar Resurfacing Treatment

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Blair Murphy says that the ingredients to look for in at-home acne scar treatments are exfoliators to encourage skin cell turnover thereby shedding off the hyperpigmentation. The formula should also have skin brighteners like those ingredients that prevent pigmentation.

“Murad Invisiscar Resurfacing Treatment contains both! The beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, exfoliates to help clear old marks as well as prevent future breakouts. Centella asiatica (cica) decreases inflammation. Hydroxytyrosol and Vitamin C are antioxidants that lighten dark spots by directly and indirectly inhibiting tyrosinase activity which reduces the production of melanin. This serum also contains light diffusers and a “blurring powder” to improve the appearance of skin immediately. Use twice daily to improve the appearance of acne scars.” — Blair Murphy, MD

12. Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel

“True acne scarring is like a bad boyfriend—it needs attention from lots of different products and just when something seems to be working it can stop being as effective. I find that acne scarring does the best with a combination of procedures and skincare products, but two easily available products that can help are Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peel Pads and Differin Gel. These glycolic and salicylic acid-containing two-step peel pads are portable and help to exfoliate the skin. They can prevent future breakouts and help to lighten the dark spots that are often leftover even after you’ve kicked your acne. These are great for patients with active acne, dark spots, and dullness. Both of these can be irritating so starting slow and building up to two to four times a week (for the pads) or every other day to every day for Differin.” — Papri Sarkar, MD

13. Bliss Bright Idea Vitamin C + Tri-Peptide Collagen Protecting & Brightening Serum – 1 fl oz

“I consider vitamin C to be the gold standard when it comes to brightening and alleviating dark mark acne scars. Bliss Bright Idea Serum is an amazing formula with clinical-grade vitamin C (the most effective and non-irritating form of vitamin C) along with tri-peptide to fade dark marks, brighten and firm skin.” — Dendy Engelman, MD

14. SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF

“I also love SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF, which is rich in vitamin C and designed specifically for acne-prone skin.” — Dr. Engelman

15. Bio-Renew EGF Drops

“EGF (epidermal growth factor) is a game-changer for treating acne scars—both texture scars and dark marks. EGF triggers your cell’s receptors to produce more collagen (a function that naturally declines as we age) which helps fill in texture scars, making them disappear from the inside out. It also strengthens the skin barrier and evens out skin tone for healthier, better-looking skin overall. I recommend Glo Skin Beauty Bio-Renew EGF Drops, which contain 100 percent vegan EGF and a multi-peptide complex.” — Dr. Engelman

16. Gold Roll-CIT Microneedling Face Roller

“At-home micro-needling treatments can also help eliminate texture scars by creating micro-wounds that trigger controlled skin injury and healing.  I recommend Environ Cosmetic Gold Roll-CIT.” — Dr. Engelman

17. Acne Treatment Gel

“Differin Gel an OTC retinoid, containing adapalene, is a great option as not only does it work to prevent breakouts, but it also treats acne and helps to improve scarring. It can [diminish] discoloration and textural changes that go along with acne scars by evening out the skin tone and boosting collagen production. [The gel] can be used once daily and it is often best to start just a few times per week and increase the frequency as tolerated. It can be used by all skin types and can be used while getting active breakouts and should continue to be used after breakouts subside to help reduce scarring and prevent new breakouts from forming.” — Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD

18C E Ferulic

18. C E Ferulic

“I like skin brightening agents like glycolic acid cleanser, vitamin C, retinoids, and retinol that help target cellular turnover. For a cleanser, I like Glytone and for a serum try Skinceuticals C E Ferulic. This combination helps to lighten pigmented scars and helps smooth the skin texture. This combination is safe in all skin types.” — Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD

19. UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF46 Facial Sunscreen

“Sunscreen is a must especially for the red acne scars as this will help them fade more quickly. Elta MD Clear is mineral sunscreen, meaning it’s a physical blocker and reflects light off the skin. The particles are also nanoparticles meaning smaller than usual so they rub in clear rather than looking white on the skin like some other physical/mineral sunscreens.”— Caren Campbell, MD

20. Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

“The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% targets the brown spots and redness left behind from healing acne spots while also helping to clear whiteheads and blackheads. It works best for those who already have an acne regimen as an add-on treatment. [The treatment] helps post-inflammatory redness and hyperpigmentation resolve more quickly.” — Cindy Wassef, MD

21. Anthelios Ultra Light Face Sunscreen SPF 60

“Wearing an SPF like La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid every day will not only help prevent new discoloration, but keep your current scars from worsening over time.” — Anne Chapas, MD

22. CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Face Sheer Tint SPF 30

“Scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can darken with sun exposure and linger on the skin longer than needed. Therefore, a broad-spectrum sunscreen, most preferably a physical blocker like CeraVe Sun Protection SPF 30 Sunscreen Face Lotion, is strongly advised.” — Shereene Idriss, MD

23. Advanced Correcting Serum with IlluminotexTM

“The Visha Skincare Advanced Correcting Serum, which I formulated, contains retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, hyaluronic acid, and Illuminotex—a patented natural lightening agent tested to work equivalent to hydroquinone 4% – a prescription level dose. It works best for hyperpigmentation in all skin types and genders, and those that are still currently breaking out.” — Purvisha Patel, MD

24. Purifying Cleanser

“SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanser encourages cell turnover without drying out the skin. The glycolic acid washes away dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin, leaving a very clean feel and improving acne blemishes.” — Y. Claire Chang, MD

Great News: We Finally Found a Nose Strip That Will Clear Your Pores Without Ripping Off Your Skin

Well+Good posted “Great News: We Finally Found a Nose Strip That Will Clear Your Pores Without Ripping Off Your Skin” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert commentary on nose strips.

When I think back to all those times I applied a pore strip to my nose, knowing it was going to hurt like hell when I pulled it off, I’m genuinely stunned. Why were we ever okay with that? Here to atone for our shared trauma, Hero Cosmetics recently launched an updated version of those painful pore strips of yore, The Mighty Patch Nose ($18), that is *so* much gentler on skin.

Considering the nose is a hotbed for breakouts, it’s about time we had a patch that would help to clear away dirt and grime from the area without sacrificing our skin. “The nose is a perfect storm to make blackheads because the pores are stretched out on a convex surface,” Purvisha Patel, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, previously told Well+Good.

Unlike traditional pore strips, this next-gen version vacuums the gunk out of your pores instead of yanking it out (seriously—why were we all okay with this?!). They’re made with hydrocolloid material—the same stuff that blister bandages are made of—which “works by absorbing excess fluid, which pulls oil and dirt away from the pimple,” says Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. Dr. Patel previously told us that people who use harsh retinoids or have sensitive skin (including eczema and rosacea) should stay away from nose strips because “more irritation and even skin damage can occur,” but Hero Cosmetics’ gentler alternative is safe for all skin types.

Speaking of “safe for all skin types,” another thing worth noting about the strips is that they don’t contain any actives. While ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (which you’ll often find in pore strips and pimple patches) are great for quashing zits, they can be irritating and drying on certain complexions. As a result, hydrocolloid-only patches, like these, “can be particularly helpful for people with sensitive skin and mild acne,” says Dr. King.

To reap the patches’ pore-clearing benefits, simply apply one to clean, dry skin before bed (or really, any time, depending on how you feel about wearing a nose strip in public), and let it sit for six to eight hours. During this time, it’ll turn white as it absorbs oils and pus from your pores—that’s how you’ll know it’s working. Each pack comes with 10 patches, which will keep you covered for many breakouts to come.

BAZAAR’s Ultimate Guide to Hyaluronic Acid

Harper’s BAZAAR posted “BAZAAR’s Ultimate Guide to Hyaluronic Acid” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert insights on hyaluronic acid along with her product recommendations.

Everything to know about the star skincare ingredient.

When it comes to plumping fine lines and making skin look supremely glowy, hyaluronic acid—which is found in serums, sheet masks, and more—is a staple skincare ingredient. But, what exactly is it? We asked dermatologists for a complete breakdown of the ins and outs of hyaluronic acid, plus, the best ways to incorporate it into just about any morning and night routine.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (or HA) is a sugar molecule found naturally in our bodies that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water to keep our skin hydrated and plump. Lily Talakoub, a dermatologist at the McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center, in McLean, Virginia, tells BAZAAR.com that HA binds with collagen and water molecules, which traps the acid in our skin and prevents it from evaporating into the air.

Similar to collagen and elastin, the amount of naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older. But experts suggest that there may be ways to stimulate production of the molecule in our bodies. “Diet affects the skin significantly,” Howard D. Sobel, a dermatologist in New York City, says. “Eating fruits and veggies with lots of antioxidants can protect the skin from inflammation, and in turn, helps the skin retain hyaluronic acid.”

How hyaluronic acid works as a powerful humectant

When used topically in skincare products, including creams and serums, hyaluronic acid gives your complexion a boost by quickly increases the skin’s moisture level. “Because of its ability to draw and hold water, it can be used as a humectant in your skincare regimen,”

Rachel Nazarian, a dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, says. “It continually keeps skin moisturized throughout the day.”

As an added bonus, hyaluronic acid also plays well with most other skin actives, making it easy to pair with peels, retinols, vitamins, and other acids. Nazarian advises that the only exception could be combining the ingredient with acids containing lower pH levels, like glycolic, because it may ultimately degrade the HA, rendering it ineffective. “As long as it is in the right formulation, hyaluronic acid will make the skin appear younger and more dewy because it helps improve its elasticity,” Kavita Mariwalla, dermatologist and founder of Mariwalla Dermatology in New York City, says. Mariwalla often recommends the SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier to her clients in need of increased skin firmness.

How to choose the right HA products for you

Choosing the right hyaluronic acid serum in particular can sometimes be tricky, as Nazarian says the molecule can sometimes be times too large to effectively deliver hydration to the skin’s layers. Her top tip to find the right HA fit? “See where the molecule is micronized, or if the hyaluronic acid is in a vehicle that penetrates the skin in order to be effective where it needs to be,” she adds. “Otherwise you are just putting it on top of the skin without it being helpful.” According to Harvard Medical School, larger HA molecules, though best at binding water, can’t penetrate deeply into the skin. And when they’re applied topically, they only provide hydration to its surface. While smaller acid molecules can penetrate more deeply through the skin’s layers, it’s ideal to look for a product contains a mix of hyaluronic acid molecules in different sizes.

When used incorrectly, hyaluronic acid serums can actually dehydrate your skin. The molecule needs water in order to plump, but without moisture on the surface of your skin or from the air, it pulls water from deep inside your skin. This process is easy to counteract: apply a HA serum on damp skin, then quickly top it with your moisturizer of choice. “HAs are best used under a more occlusive moisturizer to trap in the water-binding effects of the acid,” Purvisha Patel, a dermatologist in Memphis and Founder of Visha Skincare, adds. Patel often suggests Vichy’s Mineral 89 to her clients in search of a plumping serum.

To keep skin extra hydrated, Nazarian typically recommends the Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer. “I love that it’s lightweight, and oil-free, so good for my acne-prone patients,” she says. “It also includes green tea, an antioxidant that works to improve skin aging, and hyaluronic acid to help maintain skins hydration.”

What are hyaluronic acid injectables?

While the most common use of hyaluronic acid in skincare is topical, the acid is also available in injectable form through popular dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane. Fillers active the ingredient in gel form to add volume to the dermis (or inner layer between the two main layers of skin). “In fillers, hyaluronic acid is bound in a gel carrier which holds it in place where it is injected,” explains Mariwalla. “The hyaluronic acid creates volume because it draws in water to the area, creating a filling effect.” While these products last up to nine months, the gel solution helps to restore facial contours, smooth fine lines, and improve radiance.

The side effects experienced after injection are typically minimal: you may experience some swelling or bruising that can last for two or three days. The most important thing to remember when getting any kind of filler or injectable os to go to a trained and board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. “Injectables do come with their own risk—they can be injected too superficially, or in rare cases, into a blood vessel,” says Nazarian.

Since hyaluronic acid is something our bodies already produce, it’s considered safe for use in a wide range of options to enhance the face and body. Nazarian adds that dermatologists often use dermal fillers to smooth bumps on the bridge of the nose, and on the feet and toes to boost cushioning and offset the effects of tissue loss.

Depending on your skincare needs, hyaluronic acid can be pivotal in maintaining or increasing your level of moisture while making it easy to strengthen the skin barrier overtime.

This is How Often You Should Be Changing Your Razor

Brydie posted “This is How Often You Should Be Changing Your Razor” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert commentary on razors.

As a kid who grew up during the golden age of the Gillette Mach III it’s staggering, if not overwhelming, to see the sheer number and variety of razors out there today. From those with upwards of four blades to models that vibrate or heat up, it’s a great time to be someone who shaves. But with all the bells and whistles taking most of our attention, there’s still a crucial question to answer, no matter how fancy your razor is: How often should I change my razor?

Admittedly, asking “how often should I change my razor?” is kind of a loaded question. Direct it to the companies who make the razors and you’re bound to get a lower number in order to sell more razors. So we reached out to a panel of experts on all sides of the shaving spectrum—including board-certified dermatologist Purvisha Patel, MD, master barber Benny Perez, and Pacific Shaving Company founder Stan Ades—to get the full story and to answer the age-old question. Read on for what they had to say.

How Many Shaves Will My Razor Last?

The long and short answer: It depends on the type of razor and where on the body you use it, as the coarseness of the hair you’re shaving ultimately determines the wear and tear on the blade. The coarser the hair, the faster your blade will dull. And you do not—we repeat—you do not want to shave anywhere with a dull blade.

Ahead, a quick overview of the three main types of razors and what you can expect from each.

Straight Razor

Great for: Getting a close, clean shave on the face with that awesome feeling of a good, old-fashioned shave. Since the blades can be sharpened, it’s ideal for those who don’t want to spend a lot on their razors.

Not so great for: Patel says straight razors require a steady hand and can cut or nick skin while going over uneven surfaces, so it’s best to avoid using them anywhere else on the body other than your face.

Skill level: Advanced. “It takes practice to learn and perfect a straight razor shave,” Perez says. “Be ready to spend extra time prepping the skin and shaving.”

Number of shaves: Since you’re only using it on the face, a straight razor will give you an average of 5-7 quality shaves.

Cartridge Razor

Great for: Getting a close shave with minimal effort basically anywhere on the body, due to its ability to glide over uneven surfaces. Cartridge razors are ideal for the face, chest, armpits, legs, and anywhere in between.

Not so great for: Guys who don’t want to change their blades regularly, as frequent usage can make cartridges clog with dead skin, hair, and bacteria. Also, cartridges can be expensive, so if you’re on a budget, you may want to consider one of the other options.

Skill level: Easy. Ideal for anyone who can hold a razor.

Number of shaves: Face, 5-7; Chest, 5-6; Armpits, 7; Legs, 7.

Safety Razor

Great for: Getting a close, effortless shave that, as longtime fan Ades says, “just ‘feels’ like you are shaving.” With an easy-to-use design and cheap blades, the safety razor is ideal for the face, chest, armpits, and legs.

Not so great for: Perez recommends staying away from more intimate areas with a safety razor.

Skill level: Intermediate. Despite its simple operation, if you’ve never used a safety razor before it may be worth asking your barber for a quick tutorial.

Number of shaves: Face, 5; Chest, 5; Legs, 5; Armpits, 5.

Ades personally recommends this iconic safety razor from renowned company Merkur for its ability to achieve a close, effortless shave and its “great shaving action.”

Can You Make Razor Blades Last Longer?

As we said, the wearability of a razor is proportionate to the coarseness of the hair you’re cutting. Perez says that typically, body hair tends to be coarser than facial hair, but that’s not always the case. One measure you can take to ensure not only a quality shave but also one that is kinder to your blade is to practice proper preparation. Perez recommends shaving during or just after a hot shower—so that skin is warm and pliable and whiskers are lifted—as well as using pre-shave oil and an emollient, alcohol-free shaving cream to create a super-slick surface for the blade to glide over.

Another way to make your razor blade last longer comes down to how you care for the blade itself. “Razor blades don’t really get dull that easy,” Ades says. “Instead, what causes nicks and cuts is the oxidation of the razor blade, which causes it to deteriorate.” In other words, the 24 hours in between shaves does more damage to the razor than the act of shaving itself. Ades recommends drying your razor thoroughly after each use and avoiding keeping it in a humid environment (like the shower).

What Happens When You Use an Old or Dull Razor?

Bad news, that’s what. “If you use a dull razor, then the skin will get traumatized during shaving,” Patel says. Dragging a dull razor across the skin creates micro cuts and tears, which exposes the nerves under the skin to air causing pain, razor burn, tenderness, and itching, not to mention the opportunity for infection. “Constant use of a dull razor over a longer period results in increased pressure used to shave the hair,” she added. “This can increase the risk of infection, scarring, and can break down collagen in the area.” Ades also points out that if the blade is unable to make a clean cut across the hair follicle, you’re liable to develop ingrown hairs.

Therefore, it’s important to pay attention while you shave, especially if you’re nearing the fourth or fifth shave on one particular razor. Watch out for a noticeable lag as the razor moves across your skin, and if you feel any tugging or resistance, stop immediately and change your razor.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Razor

Never share razors: “Don’t share your razor with anyone else,” says Ades, as doing so may transmit bacteria and dead skin cells. Plus, it’s just gross.

Don’t use the same razor on different areas of the body: “The hair on the face is not the same quality as that on the body, so there are different needs,” Patel explains. “The body gets moist and sweaty and using the same razor increases the risk of spreading infection/bacteria and getting ingrown hairs.”

Always keep it fresh and sharp: “A fresh and sharp blade is going to get you the close shave you desire,” says Perez. “You can really feel a blade pulling if it’s not new as opposed to smoothly gliding across the skin.” And the closer the shave, the less often you’ll have to shave.

Choose your shaving product wisely: “The shaving product you use should not be made of anything edible such as coconuts, olives, or butters. If we can eat a product, bacteria and fungus can too,” says Patel. This can increase the chance of developing irritation and shaving bumps.

The Final Takeaway

As you can see, asking something as simple as “how often should I change my razor?” opens the gateway into today’s exciting world of shaving, and taking the right steps to ensure a smooth, healthy shave will help you achieve better grooming habits overall.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Marie Claire posted “How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Acne” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert commentary on the benefits of tea tree oil for acne.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Acne

It’s basically the holy grail.

To say acne-prone skin is annoying is putting it mildly. Finding an effective spot treatment is a real feat, whether you deal with sensitivity, dry skin, hormonal acne, or all of the above. But tea tree oil for acne is a remedy to consider—especially if you’ve attempted to treat zits with classic over-the-counter products that result in rashes, irritation, and flakes. And while the wonderful world of tea tree oil can be smelly, it’s one of those non-irritating acne treatments worthy of interweb praise.

Tea tree oil sounds like one of those hippie-dippie alternative skincare treatments that surely can’t be as effective as tried-and-true ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, right? Wrong. Once you dab it over whiteheads and bumps at night, you’ll wake up, well, the same zits, albeit much smaller and visibly less irritated. Hey, nothing topical is going to get rid of your acne in a few hours, regardless of what the packaging may claim.

Still, as anyone with sensitive skin knows, it’s a big deal to find a pimple product that doesn’t irritate the hell out of your face. And tea tree oil isn’t just a magical acne-fighter. Studies show that tea tree oil can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide at treating acne, but with fewer irritating side effects.

How does tea tree oil work on acne?

As a quick refresher, benzoyl peroxide—or BP—is chemically formulated to kill the acne-causing bacteria on your skin quickly. The downside: said speediness often comes at an irritating cost. However, tea tree oil (TTO) uses natural antibacterial properties to kill off bacteria at a slower, gentler rate. So why use TTO if it’s slower? Because “it’s also a natural anti-inflammatory,” explains dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D., associate clinical professor at Yale University, meaning it’ll help calm the redness and irritation already on your skin without causing more. For anyone with hyper-sensitive skin, that’s a huge, huge deal.

Of course, there are some caveats. “Tea tree oil can be really drying on some people,” says Dr. Gohara—namely, if you use it undiluted, which is the biggest of no-nos. Moreover, for something that sounds so harmless (oil! tea!), it’s surprisingly irritating when applied to clean, dry skin, thanks to how intensely concentrated tea tree oil is. But don’t freak—as long as you dilute it before you apply it, you’ll be fine.

How should I apply tea tree oil to my skin?

One of the most effective ways to apply TTO is with a damp Q-tip (to further help dilute it) after applying moisturizer at night, so there’s a buffer between it and your skin. Then, swab the inside of the TTO lid with the damp Q-tip to pick up a small amount of product before dabbing it over zits. Easy, peasy.

Be forewarned, though: Tea tree oil has a strong medicinal smell that may or may not make your roommate or S.O. whine loudly. But for that sweet, sweet zit-killing relief (without the irritation)? All the whining in the world is worth it.

What do dermatologists say about tea tree oil?

Sure, the tea tree oil gets rave reviews, but what do top dermatologists think of the product? “My patients love to use it as a scalp antiseptic to decrease flaking due to psoriasis on their scalp and in their ears,” says Dr. Jeanine Downie, MD and co-host of the skincare round table talk, The Gist.

Again, ensuring you’re using small amounts of this stuff is key. Don’t go overboard. Purvisha Patel, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, recommends not using it on your skin directly if it’s super sensitive. “It’s best when mixed in or diluted in other oils and skincare formulations to prevent irritation of the skin,” Dr. Patel explains.

Meanwhile, Ramya Viswanathan, the Biossance Director of New Product Development, is partial to combining tea tree oil with squalane. “Tea tree oil is a quite potent ingredient on its own,” she says. “We love pairing it with squalane to harness the purifying benefits while nourishing, hydrating, and replenishing the skin.”

How often should I use tea tree oil for my acne?

“There is no correct answer for this question because everybody reacts differently,” explains Julia Bao, founder and director of BAO Laboratory. So if you’re looking to add the essential oil to your skincare regimen, test it on a patch of skin first to make sure you don’t face any skin-tingling side effects.

Are there any risks to tea tree oil?

“Tea tree oil is also photosensitive, so make sure to avoid direct sunlight or only use at night time,” adds Bao. When in contact with the sun, tea tree oil changes, not for the better. Results range from sunspots and blisters to rashes or even burns. To play it safe, stick to using it with your nighttime skincare routine only.

I’m Trying to Look 25 Forever, so I Asked Derms What Night Creams to Prioritize

Who What Wear posted “I’m Trying to Look 25 Forever, so I Asked Derms What Night Creams to Prioritize” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel and Visha Skincare.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert insights on key ingredients to search for in a night cream, and features Visha Skincare’s Rejuvenating Moisturizer, one of the best night creams for people in their 20s.

Right now, at age 25, my skin looks pretty good. I try to take really good care of it, and I get a few preventative treatments here and there (perks of being a beauty editor), but for the most part, I know I don’t have to mess with it too much. I’d love for my skin to look like this forever, but I also welcome aging. The older you get, the wiser you get, and there’s nothing to be scared of when it comes to aging gracefully!

If you’re in your 20s like me, it might seem a bit early to start paying attention to heavy-duty skincare products. “In our 20s is when we may start to see some early signs of aging such as fine lines and hyperpigmentation,” says Jenny Liu, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Minneapolis. “In our late 20s, skin starts to make less collagen and hyaluronic acid.”

One of the best ways to begin taking better care of your skin is to start using a night cream. “Night cream in the 20s can include ingredients such as retinol that helps to repair sun-exposed skin, clogged pores, and acne-prone skin,” says Cheryl Burgess, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery in Washington, DC. Burgess recommends looking for a thicker cream that can help repair the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.

Other key ingredients to search for in a night cream are vitamin C, ceramides, fatty acids, peptides, niacinamide, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. And don’t just stop at night cream. Purvisha Patel, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, says you should consider layering a retinol underneath and make sure to wear sunscreen every morning to prevent sun damage.

Below, I’ve rounded up the best night creams for people in their 20s. These creams will help your skin retain its volume and moisture while you sleep.

The Inkey List Omega Water Cream Moisturizer

“For oily to combination skin, I recommend The Inkey List Omega Water Cream, which is a great gel-cream that’s hydrating but fast absorbing, non-sticky, and oil-free,” says Liu.

Olehenriksen Strength Trainer Peptide Boost Moisturizer

This year is all about barrier repair, and this bouncy gel moisturizer from OleHenriksen is no exception. Packed with amino acid, peptides, ceramides, and collagen, it strengthens your skin barrier while leaving skin impossibly smooth.

Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Moisturizer

If you’d like a richer cream, Liu recommends this moisturizer. It’s infused with omega fatty acids and hyaluronic acid to plump skin and help repair the skin’s barrier.

Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream

Somehow, this moisturizer is thick and emollient without feeling heavy at all on the skin. Take it from me—I’ve gone through two jars of this cream. I love it so much. Japanese purple rice acts as an antioxidant to protect skin, and algae and hyaluronic acid prevent moisture loss.

In this potent night cream, fermented tea and green coffee extract work to fight free radical damage and slough off dead skin cells. It also helps smooth your skin’s texture.

Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream

This is another face cream that I will always come back to. It does such a good job at moisturizing and repairing skin thanks to ceramides and a blend of nourishing oils.

Versed Skin Soak

Squalane, vitamin E, and algae are blended together in this rich cream to provide deep hydration.

Visha Skincare Rejuvenating Moisturizer

“Visha Skincare Rejuvenating Moisturizer has unicorn-root extract to help with collagen and estrogen loss,” says Patel.

RoC Multi Correxion 5-in-1

Talk about a multitasking product. This night cream reduces discoloration, firms and hydrates skin, adds radiance, and works to smooth fine lines.

15 Best Niacinamide Serums for Brighter Skin, According to Dermatologists

Prevention.com posted “15 Best Niacinamide Serums for Brighter Skin, According to Dermatologists” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel and Visha Skincare.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert commentary on Niacinamide, and features Visha Skincare’s Advanced Correcting Serum.

This do-it-all ingredient can keep oil in check, reduce redness, and get your skin glowing.

Niacinamide has become one of the buzziest skincare words on the market—and for good reason. The superstar ingredient works to treat various skin concerns at once, making it essential to add the best niacinamide serum into your skincare regimen.

Wait, what is niacinamide?

The ingredient is a form of vitamin B3 and can stand on its own in serums and creams, but it’s even better when combined with other skin-boosting ingredients. “B3 is an essential nutrient the body needs,” says Purvisha Patel, M.D., board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare.

Despite what the packaging says, it’s best to scan the ingredients label and look for “niacinamide”—not nicotinic acid. “It’s thought that nicotinic acid converts into niacinamide, but nicotinic acid can cause flushing and redness of the skin,” says Dr. Patel.

What does niacinamide do and how does it work?

“Niacinamide does a little bit of everything with minimum to potentially no irritation, making it a very inclusive ingredient,” says Elyse Love M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “This powerhouse ingredient soothes the skin barrier, decreases overall irritation for a slew of skin issues, helps enhance skin’s overall moisture, reduces oiliness, and promotes more even skin tones,” she explains.

Dr. Patel also adds that the ingredient has a significant brightening benefit, “as it affects melanocytes, cells that play a role in pigment formation in the skin.” For that reason, you’ll find it in products designed to fight discoloration and lessen red marks left over from acne. What’s more, because niacinamide reduces irritation, “it can temper the effects of other anti-aging ingredients that can cause the skin to act up, like wrinkle-smoothing retinol or exfoliating alpha hydroxy acids,” Dr. Patel adds.

Serums are actually one of the best vehicles for niacinamide. “The vitamin is water-soluble and will most effectively absorb into the skin in a serum form,” explains Dr. Patel. “An effective serum should also have two to 10% of niacinamide,” says Annie Gonzalez, M.D., board-certified dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology in Miami.

How often should I use niacinamide?

The great news is that niacinamide is gentle and can be used daily in both your morning and nighttime skincare routines. As with any serum, make sure you layer it on after cleansing your skin (to remove makeup, dirt, and oil) and before moisturizer (so it can penetrate the skin more easily.) “I personally infuse this into my skincare routine and am regularly recommending this to my patients,” says Dr. Love.

Now that know the facts about this ingredient, you can give your skin the glow it deserves. Here are the best niacinamide serums you can try, according to experts and shoppers.

1. Pure Retinol Face Serum with Vitamin B3

This pure retinol face and neck serum is a dream come true if you haven’t found a daily serum that works for you. It leaves the skin feeling smoother, hydrated, and refreshed right after using the product. And with over 1,500 five-star ratings on Amazon, it’s customer favorite as well.

2. Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum

So lightweight you can barely feel it on your skin, the niacinamide and zinc PCA (helps reduce the look of clogged pores) in this serum are an ideal duo for balancing oil production to keep pores clear while maintaining needed moisture. Fragrance-free, it won’t cause skin irritations.

3. Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum

“This is one of the best options out there, and added bonus is the affordable price,” says Dr. Love. “It combines the powerhouse ingredients of niacinamide with zinc, another great anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredient. It’s also a lightweight option that is complementary to an acne routine. I also reach for this serum because it’s cruelty-free and vegan. Dab all over the face morning and evening before applying heavier creams or moisturizers,” she advises.

4. PRO Strength Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment

When your focus is on reviving skin’s radiance and chasing away discoloration, this niacinamide complex contains a bevy of brighteners. Along with niacinamide, there’s tranexamic (helps reduce the look of dark spots) and kojic acids (for brightening) to tackle discoloration, says Dr. Patel. The overwhelmingly positive reviews say that this product has helped lighten scars, acne marks, and hyperpigmentation while improving the skin’s texture.

5. Mineral 89 Prebiotic Face Serum

“This hyaluronic acid + niacinamide + probiotic serum helps soothe irritated skin and fight visible signs of aging and stress,” says Dr. Love. “Most of my dry skin-prone patients are using this in conjunction with their prescription topicals. Every morning and evening, apply two pea-sized drops onto cleansed skin as the first step in your routine.”

6. Metacell Renewal B3 Unisex

This serum’s formula is crafted with niacinamide to tackle dark spots on the skin, peptides that plump, and hydrating-but-not-greasy glycerin, this product (a cross between a lotion and serum) makes the skin look and feel renewed the second you smooth it on. Suitable for all skin types, the moisturizer is also sulfate-, paraben-, fragrance-, and phthalate-free.

7. Niacinamide Oil Control Serum

With 10% niacinamide, this well-priced and potent serum is a fan favorite. Not only is niacinamide added to reduce oil production to fight blemishes, but it also relieves the redness that comes with acne. And the hyaluronic acid ingredient hydrates without contributing to greasiness.

8. Facial Radiance Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum

“I love this lightweight serum that’s formulated with niacinamide and licorice root (helps to soothe and brighten the skin) to promote a radiant appearance,” says Dr. Love. “It works hard to reduce dark spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and post-acne scars. Apply morning and evening as the first step in your routine, then end with moisturizer—and SPF, of course, if you’re applying in the morning!”

9. Advanced Correcting Serum

Dr. Patel recommends this serum to patients looking to treat mature skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles. It works to promote exfoliation, improve the skin’s barrier, and even out skin tone. It’s also packed with other agents that target discoloration, including kojic acid and licorice extract, as well as retinol to promote collagen formation and smooth fine lines.

10. 10% Niacinamide Booster

This booster packs in 10% niacinamide to tackle uneven skin tone. (It also helps cinch pores while it’s at it, refining texture.) Licorice extract tackles redness, while vitamin C provides another boost of brightness. Add two to three drops of this silky serum to your moisturizer (or dab onto the skin alone) at night and during the day.

11. Honest Beauty Calm & POREfect Serum

“This is a very lightweight serum that sinks in quickly,” wrote one satisfied Amazon customer. “I have combo dehydrated skin with rosacea and eczema. And this works well with no irritation and no pilling. Highly recommend!” The formula includes a unique calming phyto-blend ingredient that works to soothe the skin and marine-derived amino acid that helps to hydrate.

12. Resurfacing Retinol Serum

Retinol stimulates skin cell turnover to reveal fresh skin underneath, helping to fade dark and red marks. The addition of niacinamide brightens and guards against the potentially irritating effects of retinol. Testers love the silky texture and credit it for reducing the appearance of acne scars and melasma.

13. Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops

Glow Recipe’s niacinamide-infused highlighting serum not only smells and looks good, but it works great, too! It’s the first of its kind highlighting skincare product that helps to brighten the skin and provide an effortless glow instantly while helping to reduce hyperpigmentation. The brand notes 97% of users agree the product made their skin look more glowy.

14. Tone Perfection Serum with Vitamin B3

This delightfully creamy serum combines the antioxidant powers of vitamin C and vitamin B3 to give the skin a visible boost in hydration and brightness. The fast-absorbing formula almost feels like a lightweight lotion, but doesn’t leave behind that sticky or tacky feeling. It layers wonderfully underneath heavier creams or SPF and has no fragrance, so even those with sensitive skin can enjoy it.

15. C+ Collagen Brighten & Firm Vitamin C Serum

This luxe serum packs a unique vitamin C technology alongside niacinamide and collagen for a do-it-all skincare product. Customers love how smoothly it applies, and that a little bit goes a long way.

30 Retinol-Based Products That Will Get Rid Of Those Pesky Marks

ELLE posted “30 Retinol-Based Products That Will Get Rid Of Those Pesky Marks” featuring Dr. Purvisha Patel and Visha Skincare.

The article includes Dr. Patel’s expert commentary on Retinol, a gold standard ingredient in skincare, and features Visha Skincare’s Advanced Correcting Serum, a product with Retinol and other tried and true ingredients to add to your routine.

30 Retinol-Based Products That Will Get Rid Of Those Pesky Marks

It’s a star ingredient for all of your skin woes.

While it’s true there is no magic bullet when it comes to perfecting skin, one ingredient comes pretty close: retinol.

“Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that also exfoliates the skin to unclog pores and increase collagen production. It is the alcohol form of the derivative, and is available in stronger percentages and orally by prescription,” Dr. Purvisha Patel, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, tells ELLE.com. The beauty of retinol is the varying strengths and versions offered, which yield different results for a gamut of skin types.

A favorite among dermatologists, retinol’s purpose is simple. “It is a tried and true ingredient that delivers what it promises in the concentrations that it is given in; it is the gold standard for a safe, effective ingredient in skincare that helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Patel adds. Retinol is known as a powerful exfoliant, which “loosens the bonds between the top layer of cells and unclogs pores to help with acne, but also tricks the skin into thinking it is wounded to stimulate collagen production,” she continued. For those with oily skin, retinol also helps to shrink oil glands to reduce oil production in the skin.

“Prescription Retin-A and Tretinoin and over-the-counter retinol increase skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen synthesis,” explains Jennifer Chwalek, MD of Union Square Laser Dermatology. “With consistent use of a topical retinol or Retin-A you can see improvement of fine lines, dark spots, texture, and tone.”

While an OTC retinol (0.5%-2% concentration) isn’t quite as effective or speedy as prescription strength, it’s less likely to cause irritation, redness, and peeling so better for anyone with sensitive or drier skin. But, proceed with caution. Dr. Shereene Idriss recommends adding retinol into your skincare routine slowly and gradually. “I would start with one night a week to see how your skin reacts before adding a second night a week and so forth,” explains Dr. Idriss. “If you find yourself to be extremely sensitive, then apply your moisturizer before your retinol in order to make it a little less irritating.”

There are also naturally derived retinol alternatives like rosehip seed oil, chicory root oligosaccharides, and tara tree gum, but Chwalek cautions that there are no studies to prove efficacy for them.
